ABOUT JITTERBUGS

At Jitterbugs Music Classes we believe joyful learning lasts a lifetime.™  Created by early childhood educator, mom  and entertainer Karen K (Kalafatas), the Jitterbugs curriculum provides a fun, playful introduction to music for children ages newborn to five years.  now in it's 9th year, Jitterbugs has been named the Best Music Class in Massachusetts by Boston Parents Paper.  Featuring twists on classic children's songs, familiar rock, pop and folk tunes for the whole family, and originals by Karen, parents call Jitterbugs "an absolute joy of a class" and "as much fun for grown-ups as it is for kids."  45-minute classes meet weekly for 8 and 10 week sessions throughout the school year.  Children must be accompanied by an adult unless otherwise noted. Located in Lexington, Arlington, Reading and Wakefield/Lynnfield, MA.

Jitterbugs Mixed Ages (3 mos - 5 years)

Jitterbugs Mixed Ages classes are packed with activities meant to develop not only a child’s natural musical ability, but their natural passion for music as well. Classes integrate singing and vocal play, rhythm training, instrument exploration, musical games and pretend play.  All of these things improve your child's ability to think, create and express.  Because Jitterbugs provide a setting in which children are surrounded by other children of various ages, their social skills and ability to connect with other people develop, too.

Children and adults enjoy exploring egg shakers and assorted drums, as well as the many musical props featured, such as BPA-free rubber duckies, scarves, and a giant parachute!  Of course, no Jitterbugs class would be complete without some serious tail shaking!  Grown ups delight in watching their children boogie, often making new friends along the way.

Big Bugs (3-5 years)

Big Bugs is a separation class (a drop-off class in which parents are onsite) for children ages 3-5.

In this interactive class, preschoolers use imagination, creativity and music to bring their favorite books and stories to life. With a focus on developing basic musical concepts, creativity and social skills, lessons include dramatic play, singing, musical games, improvisation, instrument exploration and prop making.   Big Bugs also builds reading readiness skills through rhyming, rhythm and songwriting.

Books explored include Llama, Llama Red Pajama (Anna Dewdney); Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes (Eric Litwin); Where the Sidewalk Ends (Shel Silverstein); Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (Mo Willems); and many others.

Baby Bugs (Infant to 12 mos)

Sing, wiggle, shake and giggle at BabyBugs, a special Jitterbugs class for newborns to 12 months and their caregiver.

This 40-minute class integrates age-appropriate activities for you and your little one to enjoy in class and at home, allowing you to cultivate his/her natural love of music every day. You'll explore music through vocal play, musical games, baby-safe instruments, singing in a wide variety of genres and styles, and even dancing (we love the Baby boogie!). This is a special time to bond with your baby and other caregivers/parents while developing your baby’s lifelong relationship with music from his/her earliest days.
